Her Name Is Mauve

In the spring of 2023, I found myself in the hospital without the ability to speak or lift my arms. Days later I received a formal diagnosis of a rare, chronic illness known as Addison’s Disease. Here, my story was forever changed.

When creating the Polaroid Painting Collection, I used film, paint, and story telling to encapsulate pieces of my own fingerprint. Smith Rock was my tribute to health, living with Addison’s Disease, and the overall work our bodies do to keep us upright. In her story I wrote:

“the body is capable of coming back from the worst of things and I believe these rocks are here to remind us of that.”

Addison’s Disease

formally known as Adrenal Insufficiency, is a condition where the adrenal glands fail to produce vital hormones like Cortisol and Aldosterone.

Mauve's experience with Addison's has been a challenging path, marked by the need for constant vigilance and adaptation, with the ever-present risk of an Adrenal Crisis—a life-threatening emergency if her body doesn't receive enough cortisol during stress or illness.

The Inspiration

Her work, including the 'Polaroid Paintings' and the 'Soft Gurl Series,' captures the beauty in life's small moments, turning them into timeless pieces of art.

Mauve's journey is not just about overcoming adversity; it's about finding strength in vulnerability and beauty in imperfection. Her art is a celebration of life, resilience, and the shared human experience, offering inspiration to those who face similar struggles.

National Adrenal Diseases Foundation

The National Adrenal Diseases Foundation was formed in 1985 by a young couple as a result of their experiences with Addison’s disease. At that time, there was no organization established to provide guidance and information about life with adrenal insufficiency. There was no way to contact others who shared this illness

As a result of the dedication of the Board of Directors, officers and members of NADF, patients with adrenal diseases now have a resource for their physical and mental health questions. The newly diagnosed can look to NADF for information from its page "Newly Diagnosed"  as well as “Facts You Need To Know” pamphlets. Anyone wishing to find support and share experiences with others can participate in one of our numerous support groups throughout the country, or can join an online discussion on the NADF Inspire website nadf.inspire.com. Even endocrinologists can stay informed through the efforts of the foundation with NADF’s Professional Membership.

“We inform, educate, and support individuals affected by adrenal disease to enhance their quality of life”
